We are off to a busy start.  Some important announcements:

THE SYMPHONY FIELD TRIP date has changed.  The new date is Nov. 30.

ONLINE ACCESS:  Log ins  for Think Central and our new reading series are changing.  The district is working on a "portal" where students will log in with their school google accounts and be able to access the new math program, the new reading program, and various other programs from the one cyber link.  Hopefully it won't be too much longer.  I will let you know as soon as it becomes available online.  Thank you

 for your patience.

LAST FREE SUMMER CONCERT  in the park at Shoup Park in Los Altos is Sunday, September 24.  Bring a lawn chair and picnic.  The concert begins at 1:30 PM.

CONFERENCES:  Conference cards went home.  Please be sure to sign and return them with your child.  Conference Week is 9/25 - 9/29.  Children will be dismissed that week at 12:55 PM.

THIS WEEK:

READING:  Our essential question this week is : What can traditions teach you about cultures?  Students are reading "Yoon and the Jade Bracelet."  The genre is Realistic Fiction.  The comprehension strategy is visualization during reading to see the story play out in your mind.  We will be working on plot sequence. We will be working on descriptive details and word choice.  Our grammar focus is distinguishing commands and exclamatory sentences while reviewing declarative and interrogative sentences.   We also are working on inflectional endings on words (suffixes).

PHONICS/SPELLING:  Short vowel "o"  "e" "u".  We are learning that one vowel surrounded by consonants makes a short vowel sound.

WRITING:  We are working on a narrative paragraph will good word choice, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, neatness and good spelling.  We are writing about a "Moment in Time."

MATH:  We continue to learn our multiplication and division facts in Unit 1.  Students are working hard to decipher word problems.  They are learning different ways to show their work using diagrams and arrays.  Please work with your child on distinguishing which numbers mean the number of groups and which number means the size of the group.  This is confusing for the children and needs lots of repetition as well as continuing to go over the words that give them a clue as to which is which.

MUSIC:  We will be continuing to learn new songs as well learn about composers around the world and the different classical music they wrote.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Have a great week!
